Traction alopecia is a condition which affects the hair follicles. It can be caused by pulling on your hair, especially with tight ponytails or braids. Hair loss may start at the temples and recede to the top of head. It is most common among African-Americans with tightly curled hair who pull their hair into small plaits/braids for long periods of time. The medical term is “Trichotillomania.”
